This past Wednesday, May 28th, ILA’s staff, students and parents volunteers took a bus to OMSI camp Kiwanilong at the Oregon coast.
The Maternelle students ( the preschoolers through Kindergarten) had lunch, played some games, and enjoyed some free time at the beach before heading back.
The 13 Elementary schoolers , however, stayed through Friday morning, participating in OMSI’s Pacific Studies Program. They got up at 6:30,at and did KP duty in the dining hall, and hiked up and down the camp acreage, as well as the nearby beaches. They played games and sang camp songs. They learned to build emergency shelters, and to recognize and discuss local animals and plants. They even built their own giant 3D map of Oregon , complete with mountains and rivers-all out of beach sand..
Friday, for the grand finale, they went to Arcadia Beach to study tidepools and their denizens. It was a wonderful adventure and throughout, the kids remained cooperative, generous, and enthusiastic. Their parents can be very proud of them; The ILA staff certainly is.
